About Couture Millinery

Couture (model) millinery means hats and millinery pieces that are crafted by hand, often to the head size and requirements of an individual client.

The best quality materials – finely woven straws and fur felts – are moulded by hand over wooden hat blocks, to create a variety of styles and shapes.

Materials are dyed to match outfits, if necessary.

These moulded pieces are delicately stitched together by hand, and finished with a vast selection of trimmings – hand-tooled silk flowers, ribbons, lace, veiling – all lightly caught in just a few places.

The finished hat looks effortless and ‘blown together’, and the proportions and fit have been tailored expressly to suit the client who will wear it.

This fabrication by hand (no glue! no heavy machine blocking! no hard-as-cardboard stiffening!) means the hat is able to be re-styled, re-trimmed and re-used (see Couture and Sustainability).

A rare luxury in these times of mass production and consumption!
